Links to Other Recommended Resources for Teaching Phylogenetics
- For an excellent web-based educational module designed to introduce students to building and interpreting phylogenetic trees, see the UCMP's "What did T. rex taste like?"
- For the most complete web-based presentation of current knowledge, see the Tree of Life Web Project
- tree-thinking.org contains excellent resources for introductory undergraduate and pre-college educators interested in integrating tree thinking into their biology courses. The site contains products generated by the tree thinking group as well as links to additional background reading, related projects, and classroom ready excercises.
Phylogenetics Software:
- J. Felsenstein manages this very comprehensive, annotated listing of phylogenetic programs, many of which are available as free downloads. The list contains detailed information about each software package; the listing is organized and cross-referenced by method and system compatibility.
- Mesquite is a modular software package for evolutionary biology, designed to perform a variety of analyses, including phylogenetic analysis. The software and documentation are free to download from the Mesquite website.
- CIPRES itself is beginning to release its new software. As this area is under active development, please check back often for the latest updates.
