The Jepson Herbarium offered a second season of workshops intended as an introduction to phylogenetics and related tree of life principles. For detailed descriptions, see http://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/workshops/2006/workshops_2006.html#feb25

* A portable museum exhibit is being developed by CIPRES; an outreach meeting was held at Yale University 9-10 December 2005, attended by 27 participants, to consider important elements of an exhibit on the tree of life. A few points are summarized below; detailed results of this meeting (including notes on the working sessions, powerpoint presentations, etc.) can be found here.
Key concepts we want to convey in such an exhibit include:
- What is phylogeny -- phylogenetic relationship?
- The size of the Tree of Life -- how big is the problem?
- How do we make inferences about relationships?
- How certain are we about phylogenetic hypotheses?
- How does the tree relate to time and space?
- What can we learn from the Tree of Life?
- Why is this important?
Some key practical issues that are being addressed:
- Intended audience
- Size/cost
- Modularity/replicability
- Interactives/games
- Personalities/thrill of discovery
